AOTR BOOK CLUB : FEBRUARY

Introducing the AOTR Book Club! Rather than publishing my top 10 books twice a year, I’ve decided to do take on the challenge and review 4 books every month. I’ll give each book a short summary (without spoilers), my personal star rating, and will finish each post with a list of the books I plan to review the following month. I hope you can read along with me!

KINGS CAGE
Victoria Aveyard

Why do authors insist on torturing their readers? Why shatter my heart into two and make me wait for another year to piece it back together? WHHHHHHHHYY!? King’s Cage is the 3^rd book in the Red Queen series. Victoria Aveyard has plotted this story really well by building an even bigger fantasy world outside Norta and further developing the characters. As such, I did find the first half of this book harder to get through than the previous two books, but it’s all part of the story building, and totally worth it. Kings Cage was an intense roller-coaster ride of a read, but I am both anxious and excited for the 4^th and final installment in this YA series! PS. TEAM CAL FOREVER!

 

THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR
Katharine McGee

If you’re into Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, you will LOVE this book! Set in the year 2118, the story follows 5 teenagers who live in a thousand-floor tower in New York City, and as you can probably assume those on the higher floors have money and everything they desire whereas those on the lower floors don’t have much at all. This book was definitely a great surprise for me! I went in with zero expectations and was quickly sucked in. I had no idea there was going to be a sequel, so when I finished the last page I was devastated to find out I’d have to wait agesssss until book 2. It’s over the top dramatic, everyone has secrets, there’s betrayal, love, lust, heartbreak – you name it!  Definitely one of those guilty pleasure type books.

 

THE NIGHT CIRCUS
Erin Morgenstern

A difficult book to summarise, but basically two magicians are set against each other by their masters in a mysterious circus that only appears at night. However, neither student know the rules nor what they have to do to win, and things start to get even more complicated when love interferes. A magical story fuelled by magic and intrigue. It is both a wonderful and bittersweet piece of fiction. Morgenstern has done a magnificent job in creating a magical night circus that is so well described you feel like you are there wandering through the tents and witnessing all the acts through your own eyes.

THE CHEMIST
Stephenie Myer

I’ve always had a soft spot for Stephenie Meyer. The twilight series got me through my senior years in high school and partly contributed to what made me start really enjoy reading again (after the deep depression that began once I finished the Harry Potter series and was forced to read the rubbish they issue in English class). Having only read The Host within the last 12 months, I’ve been holding out for the next novel by the world renowned author. The Chemist certainly did not disappoint! This part thriller/part romance allows for a fun and gripping read – I had a few LOL moments which I always love in a book. I loved the whole spy/government agent thing that was going on – though it is a bit confusing in the beginning – but hold on! It all makes sense in the end.
